Human Subjects Protection Regulation in the United States: How Did We Get There, and Where Are We Going?


The United States has a long and somewhat checkered history with respect to the ethical conduct of human subjects research. We have come a long way towards ensuring high safety and ethics standards, with history as our guide and scientific discovery as our impetus.  This presentation will discuss some of the historical events that shaped our current research regulation, and it will also consider what the future may hold for IRBs and the countless volunteers who elect to participate in medical research.
