Matters of Life and Death: Ethical Controversies
Matters of Life and Death: Ethical Controversies
Decisions regarding withholding and/or withdrawing life-sustaining treatments remain difficult, even in the situation of terminally ill patients, in the hospital intensive care unit. This lecture reviews options, evaluates the roles of patients, doctors, nurses, families and friends in efforts at achieving consensus, and examines typical clinical cases. It concludes with a critical discussion of the role of Institutional Ethics Committees.
